Save the Date: Bee The Change Walk

April in Vegas is a truly beautiful time - a renewing bounty of days in the sweet 70’s and nights in the cool, but not cold, 50’s.  On April 17th through the 19th, Nations Rising, a Kindness Movement, and volunteers will be completing a 17-mile walk through the beautiful, Red Rock Canyon to spread love, prayers and wildflowers for the bees. The Walk will kick off a week of activities in service and celebration of the world’s 50th, internationally-recognized Earth Day (April 22nd).

Why the Bees? 

Their work amounts to every 1 in 3 bites that we take. The world’s crops depend on these precious pollinators’ very existence. In recent decades, just a few years in the grand spectrum, their populations have steeply declined and are continuing to die out, one of many species leaving the Earth during this time of the Sixth Mass Extinction.   

1. We know that Insecticides are killing them (in addition to poisoning those of us not eating organic produce).  

2. We know that their homes are being decimated by sprawling Urbanization. 

3. And we know that aggressive, fossil-fuel driven climate changes are affecting their development and shortening their lifespans. 

Solutions Exist

Within Las Vegas, many organizations are active and aligned with the Global Climate Movement to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all (gofossilfree.org).  Many are leveraging #FridaysforFuture to demand change from their local government and public servants.  

This Bee Walk is an example of how the Movement becomes bigger and more impactful with each individual and each new partnership. 

The bees are a reminder that all of this is connected. That our individual, tiny but daily choices add up. We can Bee the Change! We are the change!

2. We can plant wildflowers and food, supporting their need for habitat (Get seeds and step-by-step help to grow your own organic free food on the walk.)

3. We can organize and mobilize to evolve our economy beyond the era of fossil fuels (Join us on the walk and get ready for our next event!)

Who is Nations Rising? 

Over the span of nearly five decades, Chief Harry Goodwolf Kindness, of the Oneida/Mohawk nations, has helped communities all over the world to address issues of social and environmental justice. He has spent a lifetime in service of Mother Earth and the people as a member of the American Indian Movement and as Chief of the Longest Walk.  Through the Nations Rising project, he is focusing his experience as a resource for the youth, a much needed source of wisdom in this new era of activism and urgent time for change. 

Why Vegas? 

Throughout the years Chief Kindness and his wife, Karen, have found great peace and renewal within the desert. The energy and power of this place is sacred. Despite this, because of its remoteness, the desert has been targeted throughout the years for Nuclear Waste Dumping and energy development. The Kindness’ have led and participated in many actions and walks opposing these one-sided projects. Additionally, the world-famous Las Vegas Strip is a beacon of human potential, a sincere and astounding display of the wide spectrum of experience and what is humanly possible... a perfect place to fly the flag of humanly-possible change.
